When most photographers think about getting faster in Lightroom, they immediately start shopping for presets. While presets absolutely have their place, the biggest improvements to your workflow often have nothing to do with editing at all. In fact, some of Lightroom's most powerful time-saving features are tucked away in menus many people click past without a second thought.
After teaching Lightroom for years, one thing has become very clear: most photographers are spending far more time working around Lightroom than letting Lightroom work for them.
Here are a few simple workflow improvements that can save you hours every month—without changing your editing style.
1. Your Workflow Starts Before You Click "Import"
Most photographers plug in their memory card, click Import as quickly as possible, and get straight to editing.
The import window, however, is doing much more than simply copying files. It's your first opportunity to automate repetitive tasks.
For example, Lightroom can generate previews while your images are importing. Although this makes the import take a little longer, it often means your culling process afterwards is dramatically smoother because you're no longer waiting for each image to sharpen every time you zoom in.
Think of it this way: would you rather wait once while you grab a coffee, or wait hundreds of tiny times throughout your editing session?
2. Stop Treating Lightroom Like It Stores Your Photos
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is photographers believing their images "live" inside Lightroom.
They don't.
Lightroom is essentially a sophisticated catalogue that keeps track of where your files are stored while remembering every edit you've made. That distinction matters because moving folders incorrectly can result in those dreaded missing-file question marks.
Once you understand this relationship, organizing your photo library suddenly becomes much less intimidating.
3. Build Habits That Future You Will Appreciate
Photography businesses don't usually become disorganized overnight.
It happens one wedding...
one family session...
one vacation...
at a time.
Having a consistent destination for your files, a backup strategy, and an organizational system may not feel exciting today, but your future self will be incredibly thankful when you're searching for a gallery from three years ago.
A little planning now saves an enormous amount of frustration later.
4. Collections Are Criminally Underrated
If you've never used Lightroom Collections, you're definitely not alone.
Many photographers spend years working exclusively from folders, never realizing Collections allow you to organize images without creating duplicate files or moving anything on your hard drive. They simply reference the original photos, making them an incredibly flexible way to sort favourites, prepare galleries, or organize personal projects.
It's one of those features that's easy to overlook, but once it becomes part of your workflow, it's hard to imagine editing without it.
5. Speed Isn't Just About Editing Faster
When people ask how I deliver galleries quickly, they're often expecting some secret editing trick.
The truth is that efficiency usually comes from eliminating unnecessary work.
If Lightroom can create previews, apply your starting preset, rename files, and even create a backup copy during import, that's work you no longer have to do manually later. Instead of sitting at your computer watching progress bars, your computer can be doing the heavy lifting while you focus on something more productive.
Those small efficiencies compound over hundreds or thousands of galleries.
The Real Time Saver
The biggest workflow improvements rarely come from learning another editing slider.
They come from understanding how Lightroom actually works behind the scenes.
Once you build a workflow that supports you instead of slowing you down, editing becomes less about fighting software and more about enjoying photography again.
